FAQs

1. Glass Types & Tints:

When thinking about a glass shower door the first thing that comes to mind is clear glass, and this is by far the most popular option. It is also worth noting that glass showers can come in a variety of different types of glass for different purposes. If you’re aiming for more clarity and transparency, HD glass is the suitable glass type. If you prefer something that offers more privacy, you can use tinted glass such as gray glass or bronze glass. To add texture to your enclosure without compromising the privacy feature, use Rain glass. Finally, opaque glass can be custom sandblasted onto the entire glass or at different opacity levels for a more personalized outcome. Learn more about the six different glass types and tints by visiting our comprehensive blog.

Glass Thickness:

When it comes to selecting a shower glass door type, the thickness of the glass plays a pivotal role in ensuring both durability and aesthetics. At Dulles Glass, we proudly offer two main options: 3/8" and 1/2" thick glass. Choosing the right thickness for your shower door guarantees a safe and stylish bathing experience. 1/2” thick glass is more substantial in look and feel but there are weight limitations that apply in considering the thicker glass option. 3/8” thick glass is the default thickness in most cases and offers a modern look. There are times when the choice between is dictated by the structure for safety and integrity.

3. Support Bars and Headers:

For larger shower installations, support bars and header bars play a vital role in maintaining stability and enhancing design. In cases where the width of the adjacent panel exceeds a certain limit, it's recommended to use a support bar for added stability. The supporting bar can be secured to the adjacent wall or the opposite wall, depending on the shower and wall configurations.

In cases where a pivot hinge is used for a PRIMA™ shower door, a header bar becomes essential if a ceiling attachment isn’t possible, as it secures the top pivot hinge and provides necessary structural support. Also, if the size of the side panel is larger than 48 inches a header bar is used for added safety. It's important to note that the header bar can be metal or glass for added aesthetics. Beyond stability, header bars can also be chosen to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the shower enclosure, making them a functional and stylish addition to your setup.

4. Glass Surface Protection and maintenance:

For optimal maintenance of your shower glass, especially in high-traffic areas like the master bathroom, consider Dulles Glass's ClearShield application. Clearshield is applied at the manufacturing level and reduces the need for maintenance by literally shedding the water off of the glass at a faster rate. The Clearshield application can be maintained through a monthly application of Aftercare. Using Dulles Glass’s AfterCare cleaner regularly helps keep your glass clean and shiny. Whether your shower features clear glass or a textured finish, proper care and maintenance are essential for preserving its beauty and ensuring it stays in top condition.

5. Attachment hardware:

Choosing between clips, clamps, or U-channels for your shower panel or glass door involves considering various factors that impact aesthetics and functionality. Dulles Glass software features innovative algorithms that precisely calculate the required number of clamps and hinges based on the size and weight of your panels, eliminating the need for manual calculations.

6. Hinges

When setting up your bathroom, it's easy to overlook the small details. But let's talk about something you might not have thought much about – shower hinges. The most popular options are Swing hinges or Pivot hinges. Swing hinges normally attach to the adjacent wall or glass whereas pivot hinges are attached to the floor and ceiling or a door header/frame. The decision between the hinge types comes down to the design/esthetics and functionality of the door. Swing hinges are by far the most popular option for hinged doors. When facing challenges in attaching the door to the wall, such as uneven tile shapes or the absence of studs, a pivot hinge with 1/2" thick glass serves as a suitable alternative. This option is perfect for showers with intricate tile patterns or glass tiles that are difficult to drill through.

8. Door Handles:

Shower door handles are a key part of your bathroom's look and feel, giving your space a unique style. There are different types to choose from, each adding character to your shower setup.

The Standard handle is a timeless choice if you like a classic and simple look. For something more elegant, the Colonial handle with its ornate details could be perfect. The Square handle gives off a modern and clean vibe, while the Ladder handle has a sleek and simple design. If you're into vintage styles, the Victorian handle with its intricate patterns might catch your eye. The Crescent handle, with its curved and comfortable design, adds a modern touch. With these options, you can pick a handle that suits your taste and complements your bathroom's style, making your shower space uniquely yours.

9. Glass Height Considerations

Shower doors typically stand at a height of 72 inches, but at Dulles Glass, we offer the flexibility to customize the height according to your preferences. Currently, a popular trend for glass shower heights is around 82 inches. It’s important to consider when deciding on the shower height is the placement of the shower head; the glass should always be a minimum of 2 inches higher than the shower head. To make it simple, just think of the height of the individuals using the shower enclosure, ensuring that the glass is at least 2 inches taller than the tallest user for a comfortable experience. Read this blog for more detailed information about the glass height considerations.

10. Steam Shower Transom Glass

Prima shower enclosures can accommodate a steam shower using a transom. A transom is a glass that is normally placed between the door and the ceiling to help control the steam in the shower area. Transoms are normally custom-cut to fit the space and can be moved or fixed based on need. This option is only available for full-service installation as the measurement and installation process is intricate and needs a glass expert.

11. Towel bars and robe hooks

Depending on the size of the glass door or adjacent side light, various sizes of towel rails can be installed. These handles may face either inside or outside. It's essential to consider the need for these attachments before glass fabrication since they are installed through the glass and require pre-drilled holes. Robe hooks are typically placed at the top of the glass shower and can be easily added or removed.

12. Notches and seats

PRIMA™ Door and Panel Shower Doors are inline but can accommodate structural requirements such as knee walls and benches, Glass can be cut with a notch or at a different height compared to the door size. This versatility ensures Prima series shower doors can enclose any inline panel layout.

13. Plumb walls and outages

In an inline configuration, there are four walls to be considered — the two adjacent walls, the bottom wall, and the top ceiling wall. While the ideal scenario involves perfectly plumb walls and square openings, real-world constructions often have discrepancies, known as "outages." Addressing these irregularities is essential for a seamless installation. There are two main ways to deal with the outages in the wall: The glass can be cut to accommodate for the amount of outage or a u-channel can be used to hide the difference in the sizes. Double-check your measurements to guarantee a smooth, hassle-free installation. Follow the guidelines outlined in the provided video  to enhance precision and achieve optimal results without introducing unnecessary complexities. Visit our blog about plumb walls and outages for more details.

14. Sweeps and seals

Sweeps and seals play a crucial role in preventing leakage, ensuring a watertight shower enclosure. These removable attachments are easy and simple to maintain. The sweeps, located at the bottom of the glass door, act as a barrier to prevent water from leaking out. Seals, on the other hand, are installed along the sides to further enhance the water-resistant properties of the shower enclosure. Over time, due to regular use and exposure to moisture, these components may wear out or degrade, impacting their effectiveness.

To ensure the continued functionality of your shower doors, it's advisable to inspect the sweeps and seals regularly and replace them as needed. While the frequency of replacement may vary based on usage and environmental factors, we advise an annual replacement as a reasonable guideline to follow. Sweeps and seals replacement is a part of the regular maintenance your shower enclosure needs, these are easily replaceable and can be purchased online for easy replacement. Check out the video/blog for a comprehensive guide on how to easily replace sweeps and seals:
