Neoceram® or Tempered – which one suits your fireplace needs best?

NeoCeram® stands out for its robust mechanical strength, making it a fitting option for high-heat hearths such as Alaska stoker stoves, pellet stoves, or any wood burning fireplaces. It can handle temperatures up to 1400°F, which is 3x times the heat resistance of tempered glass. Despite its higher cost, it ensures better strength and a longer lifespan, making NeoCeram a reliable choice. In terms of safety, this type of glass tends to crack before shattering, breaking into large pieces for added safety. Its improved resistance to moisture makes NeoCeram particularly fitting for installations in outdoor settings where exposure to water is a concern, especially for fireplace doors. For fireplace doors situated within 6" of the flames and in areas with limited air circulation, NeoCeram stands out as the best choice. Its subtle brownish hue enhances the overall aesthetic appeal.

On the other hand, a tempered glass fireplace cover proves to be an ideal selection for those seeking a more budget-friendly option. It is particularly well-suited to be used as screens positioned farther away from the flames, where there is some ventilation allowing air circulation between the fire and the glass.

It is important to note that these 2 types of glass have distinct characteristics. Neoceram glass, being inherently brittle, cannot undergo drilling for holes or notches; it must maintain a perfectly rectangular or square shape with only flat polish or pencil polish as edge options, the same applies to tempered. Fabricating NeoCeram glass can be challenging, and scoring and breaking the glass may sometimes result in breakage.

What does fireplace glass do?

Fireplace glass enhances both the functionality and visual appeal of a fireplace. With its ability to withstand extreme temperatures, the glass effectively amplifies the heat generated by the firebox while maintaining its cleanliness and strength. This not only ensures the efficient retention of warmth but also promotes energy efficiency. Beyond its thermal benefits, it also acts as a protective barrier between the elements within the fireplace and the surrounding environment, safeguarding homes, families, and pets from embers and crackling logs. It also contributes to the overall aesthetic charm of the fireplace, making it a visually pleasing and integral component of both traditional and modern hearth designs.

How thick is fireplace glass?

Fireplace glass commonly varies in thickness, with options typically available in 1/8", 5/32", 3/16", and 1/4". Dulles Glass provides specific options for fireplace glass thickness, offering NeoCeram® with a thickness of 3/16" and tempered glass at 1/4". This particular choice accommodates various fireplace types, including renowned brands like Duraflame, Heatilator, and Drolet. Whether it's for a gas fireplace door, screens, cast iron wood stoves, fireplace inserts, furnaces, or any hearth with a glass door, this selection is versatile.

Do you need special glass for a fireplace?

Choosing glass for a fireplace typically involves the common practice of using toughened glass due to its safety features, but it may not always be necessary. For a regular fireplace with doors safely positioned away from the flame and operating within a temperature range of 400-500ºF, toughened glass stands out as a secure and cost-effective option. However, if prioritizing heat transfer efficiency and are willing to invest more, ceramic glass is your top choice. It maximizes energy utilization by efficiently transferring heat into the room and allows you to close the doors without the risk of shattering due to its increased durability making it suitable for masonry fireplaces and prefab fireplaces. This dual advantage highlights the importance of choosing the right glass type based on your fireplace's specific requirements and design, ensuring both safety and optimal heat distribution. Glass ceramic can easily withstand high heat up to 1400°F, making it suitable for fireplaces that will be used often

What is the best way to clean fireplace glass?

Keep your fireplace glass clean with this simple method. To eliminate stubborn black soot and restore the glass to its pristine clarity, use a solution of vinegar and water, letting it sit for one minute before wiping it away. If this method proves ineffective, take a damp cloth and dip it into old fireplace ash, using it to rub over the soot stains. For persistent soot deposits, moisten the area with water and gently scrape it away. It's important to keep in mind the use of an ammonia-free gentle glass cleaner, as ammonia can potentially scratch and burn the glass when exposed to heat.

Are glass fireplaces safe?

The safety of glass in fireplaces depends on the type of glass used— Tempered glass and glass ceramic which can withstand high temperatures are commonly used for this purpose. While these glass materials reduce the risk of accidents, caution is essential, as even durable glass can shatter if exposed to direct flame or experiences a rapid temperature increase beyond its temperature shock rating. Although the tempered option is suitable for many scenarios due to its resistance to gradual temperature changes, glass ceramic such as NeoCeram®  is a safer alternative, with the ability to withstand continuous high temperatures up to 1400°F, offering enhanced safety and durability for fireplace doors.

How do you measure glass for a fireplace?

When measuring glass for your fireplace, precision is key for a perfect fit. There are three common fireplace specifications—Masonry fireplace, Inside Fit, and Custom Masonry. For a standard masonry fireplace, take three height measurements from the left, middle, and right, as well as three width measurements from the top, middle, and bottom. Opt for the smallest measurement for both height and width to determine the correct size. If dealing with overlap or rough finishing, consider custom cut fireplace glass for a perfect fit. In the case of zero-clearance fireplace doors (inside fit), measure the inside width and height of the fireplace opening. If you're going the custom masonry route, it's straightforward – measure the height from left to right and the width from top to bottom, using the smallest measurements. This ensures that your fireplace glass fits precisely, promoting safety and a polished appearance.
