Glass table tops are used in three main ways: As a glass table cover, as a glass table topper on a pedestal, or as a glass insert that fits in a rim. With Dulles Glass, you can design your own custom glass table top or choose from our pre-made collection of round, rectangle, and square table tops. Let's dive a little deeper into how to choose the right table top for your next project:
Glass Table Top Protectors / Furniture Protectors
If you need a glass top for your desk, dining table, coffee table, or other furniture, you can customize your tabletop glass here. When used as a glass table cover on a wood surface, you can use a thinner glass such as 1/4". We recommend choosing a pencil polished edge or flat polished edge for your table protector glass.
Customization recommendations for glass table covers:
Glass Thickness: 1/4" is the preferred thickness. 3/8" or 1/2" can be used for effect but make sure that the furniture can carry the weight.
Edge Type: Flat polish is the preferred edge work. However, pencil polish or beveled polish can be used for a unique effect.
Glass Strength: Annealed glass is sufficient to protect the table but glass can always be tempered for added safety, especially if there are younger kids in the house.
Glass that Sits on a Pedestal
Glass table tops can also be used when the surface is made only of glass that is supported by a pedestal. The support can be made of glass, wood, metal, or any other material. In these instances, the glass has to be tempered for safety reasons.
Customization recommendations for glass that sits on a pedestal:
Glass Thickness: Please choose 3/8" or 1/2" glass. Thinner glass is not recommended in these cases.
Edge Types: Flat polish, pencil polish, or beveled polish edges are all acceptable. This is an option where you are in complete control and you can choose the look and the effects you want for your table glass.
Glass Strength: Tempered glass is recommended for added safety and strength
Insert Glass Into a Metal Frame
For a glass table top where the glass sits in a metal frame, such as a patio table top, it can be a little tricky to get the exact glass you'll need. If you need to replace broken glass that sits inside a metal frame, please straighten the frame before you measure for the glass you need. We will fabricate the glass exactly to the dimensions you provide with a 1/8" cutting tolerance.
Customization recommendations for replacing glass embedded in a frame:
Glass Thickness: 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2", depending on the table. Follow the table manufacturer's recommendations if at all possible.
Edge Types: Seamed edge or flat polished edge. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations or go by what was used with the table before if you are replacing broken table top glass.
Glass Strength: Tempered glass is recommended for added safety and strength.
